Tiger Hair Clips

My sewing box is kind of a mess. In the bottom part there's lots of little things I made and haven't done anything with.
Like this tiger face.
I made a few of them at the time - and even made one into a necklace - but the others got forgotten.

The tiger face is a circle of fabric sewn around a disc with a bit of stuffing.
I decided to buy some hair clips from Ebay to do something with it.

I made a simple bow from this black leathery fabric, which I've used here and here, and attached the tiger face to the front.

Then I glued the hair clip to the back of the bow and it was done.

As well as a tiger face I also had a couple of tiger print circles.
I attached one to another bow that I'd started to make but didn't finish because the fabric was too thick to be a proper bow, but it worked for this hair clip.

I love these simple project where I've done most of the hard work already.

Velvet

Even though velvet was recently a big trend, I think the last time I rocked it was this.

So I haven't had much to do with velvet.
Until now!

I got given this velvet fabric to make this bag for a production of Annie Get Your Gun.
More prop making.
And it's mustard coloured. That's another trend, right?

I figured the theatre people wouldn't want the scraps of fabric back so I did what I do with most bits of fabric.
I made a coupla bows.
The smaller one is a brooch and the larger one is a hairband which you can find on Etsy here.

Pink bows

I really like my black bow necklace but everyone always refers to it as a bow tie when I wear it.
So I thought I'd make one in a different colour to make it less bow tie like.

So I picked pink of course.
This stripy fabric is from an old pillow case.

I also made the bow smaller than the black one.
I think it's dainty.

I actually made seven little pink bows in one sitting so I put these three block colour ones together and added a long chain.

I like it.
Now, what to do with the other three bows...

Denim Bow

Just when you think I can't make any more bows; boom. Here's one made out of denim.
Which is a tricky fabric since it's so thick.
But I got it to do what I want.
Usually I attach big elastic hair bands to the bows I make but I didn't have one the right colour so I left it for a long time.

And then I had a lightbulb moment.
I put a regular small hair band through the bow and now I can wear it with a ponytail.

Or with a messy bow.
Voila.

And I can also slip the bow onto an existing metal hairband and wear it that way if I feel so inclinded.

All these possibilities just opening up to me. Whoah.

Handmade Christmas

My friends and I have a tradition of The Annual Gift Exchange where we exchange our Secret Santa presents. Although it's not very secret as we usually know who's got who within seconds of handing out names, which is usually some time in September.

This year I got my friend Laura who had expressed some interest in my handmade hair bands.
So as part of her present I made her a special bow hair band.

It's cream fabric with white lace over the top.

She loved it and didn't realise it was handmade until I told her.

I received so many glittery and sparkly things from my friend Lizzi!

The afternoon also included putting my camera on self-timer and setting it to take multiple shots, and deciding we should be in different positions for each shot. Hilarity ensued.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

Bow necklace

I got this load of leather looking PVC type material from The Range the other day for £2.70.
It's another cheap shop but it has a really great art and craft section.

To test out how well I can sew the material I made a little bow.
Because bows are awesome.

I thought it would've been to obvious to make the successful bow into a hairclip so I made it into a necklace instead.
I put eyelets into two of the corners then attached jump rings and a chain.
Eyelets are my new favourite thing and I want to put them in everything.

It's kinda like a bow-tie!

Bargain time #3

I'm back home for the Easter holidays and on Saturday I hit up a jumble sale with my Mum and scored this lot.

This bunch of fabric for 40p.
40p!
The mint green polka dot and that funky brown stuff are my favourites.
I'm thinking bows. Lots and lots of bows.

I also got Buckaroo for 20p to join my 99p Kerplunk from Oxfam. Oh yes.

In other news I finally updated my Etsy shop.
Check it out!

My Model Room: #8 Bedding

The project continues with the bedding. I got the sewing machine out and whipped up a duvet and pillows.

My top bunk is where we store spare pillows so I made a few extra to copy this. This part isn't finished yet as my actual top bunk is covered in a blanket with a hexagonal patchwork pattern, but I haven't figured out how to replicate this yet.

The duvet and top pillow on my bed are double sided and I went for plain pink for one side and a pink patterned fabric for the other, which is the actual fabric of my duvet set and curtains. My Mum re-hemmed my curtains, cutting off the extra so I could use it for my model room.

I've got a lot of the extra curtain fabric leftover so I made a hair bow with it. Now I can match my room!

More bows

After the success of my first handmade bow I wanted to make some more. And this time, because I'm at home now, I had access to my Mum's sewing machine. And we all know what that means = mass production.

This one and the next are attached to hair bands, and the other three are on hair elastics.

Fun fact; my Mum screen printed this fabric when she was at art college.

If I put these on Etsy do you think people would buy them?

Bows!

I made a bow!

And here's some other wearable bows from the craft world:

I love these dainty bows made into a ncklace by Jenna C. on Cut Out and Keep

Sharlene dresses up a basic t-shirt with a homemade lacey bow.

And something for the boys; Linda Permann on Craftzine made this crocheted bow tie.
