New painting project

For my latest project at uni I've decided to address my use of photos when painting. I almost always use a photo for referance, just because it's easier.

I've been doing it since I was 5!

Often I'll take a photo of a place I've been and try and paint that. This is Budleigh Salterton.

I also alter things from the photo, like the background in this painting.

Or I take an element out of context by painting it with a different background.

What are your thoughts on painting directly from a photo? Do you think it shows artistic skill, or lacks imagination? Should we all be outside painting 'en plein air' like the Impressionists, or be creating compositions completely from our imaginations?
